Dr. Hudson, psychotherapist

Albuquerque psychotherapist, Patrick Hudson MA, MALA, MD, is an existential therapist. He uses a humanistic, psychodynamic approach to his patient's mental health based on the methods developed by May, Yalom, Fromm and Jung.

pah2010

He is a therapist, and counselor, with qualifications in mental health counseling, medicine, surgery and plastic surgery.

As well as a separate psychotherapy practice through Samaritan Counseling he maintains an active plastic surgery practice.

He has a special interest in psychotherapy for physicians and mental health professionals. Using a psychodynamic approach he helps his clients find meaning and purpose, in their life and relationships. As a physician for nearly 40 years, he understands the unique needs of medical doctors and other professionals. He has special expertise with disruptive physicians.

Dr. Hudson is the only anger management specialist in New Mexico certified by the National Anger Management Association and the only Century certified Anger Management Professional in New Mexico. He  is available for coaching and education.  He specializes in anger management for disruptive physicians  and anger management coaching for  executives.

He is available for conflict management in the medical workplace both for one on one coaching and for departmental or organizational lectures and workshops.

Most therapists should undergo a period of self examination and therapy to equip them for helping clients and avoid the dangers of countertransference. Dr. Hudson feels that existential therapy provides one of  the best ways to do this

Medical malpractice litigation takes a severe toll on physicians and most doctors feel angry and irritable. Many cannot sleep and feel isolated or alone. During this stressful time some  consider suicide or turn to drugs and alcohol.  The greatest risk is among those who try to cope without professional support and counseling.

Although divorce rates are not higher in medical families, many doctors are unhappy in their marriage. As well as individual therapy, Dr. Hudson works with physicians, and their spouse or partner, to resolve conflict and improve intimacy and understanding in their marriage, or relationship.

Physicians suffer from the same emotional problems as the rest of the community, but are especially vulnerable to depression and suicide, relationship problems, anxiety, and professional burnout.

Stress in mid-life is normal and Dr. Hudson can work with you as you pass through these normal periods of crisis  His own mid-life career change and training in counseling  makes him uniquely qualified to help explore new life and work opportunities in mid-life.

Existential psychotherapy is defined by Yalom as “a dynamic approach to therapy which focuses on concerns that are rooted in the individual’s existence.” Dr. Hudson believes that at the root of many of our everyday concerns, such as burnout, depression, anxiety, and relationship problems, are four ultimate existential issues — meaninglessness, isolation, freedom and death. How we deal with these concerns is often a source of significant emotional conflict. While it is true that no one therapy works for everyone, Dr. Hudson feels that most of his clients do not suffer from a medical problem but are dealing with existential anxieties.  For this reason he feels that for most, existential psychotherapy offers the best principles for therapeutic practice.

With many of his patients Dr. Hudson likes to work using mindfulness techniques alongside more traditional methods of therapy.

Dr. Hudson believes an important role for psychotherapists is educational outreach to the community, and training new therapists.

Many of his patients in his medical and therapy practices have come from local communities in New Mexico (NM), Texas (TX) and Southern Colorado (CO).

Every year Dr. Hudson obtains many hours of additional training, and continuing medical education, CME and CE.
