Why rebuild the nipple after breast reconstruction?

NOTE: Dr.Hudson does NOT perform this surgery nor is this page a reflection of current knowledge in this speciality.

Not all women want to rebuild the nipple after they have had breast reconstruction. Those that do, say that it serves two purposes.

The nipple is the focal point of the breast. Adding the nipple changes the breast mound into a more normal looking breast.

Secondly, until the nipple is added many women do not feel the reconstruction is complete. They remain aware of the original cancer and feel unable to get on with life.

Either way for most women reconstruction of the nipple is well worth while but it does add another operation to go through. Many women and their families feel that they have already been through enough.
