• Thrombosis (DVT) and embolism: surgery and long distance travel can be a lethal combination

• Location and picking a good place: a good vacation spot is not always the same as a good place to have surgery

• Water and food: local conditions may make the difference between a successful outcome and a disaster

• Get a physical exam before you leave home: make certain that you are a safe candidate for surgery from a doctor you already know and trust

• Suitable operations for long distance surgery: not every operation is suitable to be performed a long way from home

• Check the facility: make certain you know where the operation is going to be done

• Payment and cost: advice on how to pay for surgery and avoid fraud

• Places to stay after the surgery: advice and information about accommodations after your operation

• Doctor visits before and after surgery: make certain you know how many visits you will need before and after surgery and when it is safe to go home

• Travel companions: consider a travelling companion, you won’t feel so lonely with a friend around

• Allow time for recovery: don’t rush yourself or return home too soon
